With so many great series to choose from 2019, where do you start? As I reflect on 2019. Here is a quick list of my favorites!
My 2019 Favorite EVERYTHING: Love and Destiny
Our protagonist is the key to unlocking a powerful and source of evil. She ends up living essentially three different lives in the human and immortal realms. The tension, choosing love in defiance of what seems an unchangeable destiny. Incredible drama, chemistry, costumes (OMG, the costumes!), and incredible fantasy. I had high hopes for this one, and I'm ecstatic (and relieved!) this one didn't disappoint. I admit, I was a bit concerned after the first few episodes; you better believe a full blog post is coming on this one. However, don't let the first few episodes turn you off. It won me over by the end (really much sooner than that), and I think you'll feel the same way I do after you watch it!
Best Martial Arts/Wuxia: Listening Snow Tower
Orphaned heroine and daughter of a blood demon joins Listening Snow Tower, a power martial arts clan. She goes through trials of love, loss, and devastating betrayal and heartbreak. This one has some darker themes, and taking a queue from shows like Game of Thrones they weren't afraid to make some surprising character deaths. Amazing martial arts, great tension between leads, and an unexpected favorite of 2019!
Best Costume/Historical: Princess Silver
A previous generation's hatred is forced upon three separate countries' royalty. At the center is Rong Le, a princess who has lost her memory. She becomes a pawn in a game of chess, where the stakes are love, war, and bitter revenge. Through it all, she remains upright and loyal to her values, her friends, and her one true love. Also, the costumes are amazing!
Cutest Drama: Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Opposites attract in this series, with two college love birds slowing falling for one another after accidentally becoming roommates. Completely adorable and just what you'll need for a fun-feel-good drama binge.
Top Love Triangle: Summer's Desire
Technically a 2018 release, but only got to the US this year (thank you Youtube!). This gets my pick for top love triangle, and oodles of drama. In order to help her younger brother survive a near fatal car crash, our protagonist decides to become an idol for on reason:
to make money! When her two childhood loves reappear (throw in some memory loss for dramatic effect), our heroine's original desire becomes less certain as she battles against her own mellow nature, the ups and downs of success, and who is truly in her heart.
Best Slice of Life: Le Coup de Foudre (Love at First Sight)
I found this show enduring and interesting by their attempt to integrate some social issues without relying on typical C-drama tropes. I watched it twice, and liked it even more the second time! From episode one, you know the two protagonists will end up together, but the destination isn't what makes it watchable, it's the deep relationships you get to see being built. From petty teenage squabbles all the way to life altering choices as adults, you are right there to watch the consequences and rewards unfold.
Best Fantasy: The Legends:
Strong female lead alert! Lu Zhaoyao and her grandfather have been guarding an imprisoned demon princeling. But what happens when he escapes? A mystical journey of reclaiming lost power and understanding who is truly by your side. If Love and Destiny wasn't topping the list for best fantasy (and everything else), this one be my pick for 2019!
