Destiny’s Love: First Impressions

Updated: May 6, 2019

I personally feel it’s tough to find balanced modern day fantasy C-dramas. The current trends seem to to rely on situational comedy between characters, then drive toward a more somber end as the story progresses. Those who push through to the end can be rewarded, but it can make it tough to move past the first few episodes.

Destiny‘s Love still has had some expected encounters and slapstick humor, but they’re oddly working for me because of the solid acting and the mix of more serious moments. Our man, Chi Yu, has broken out of celestial prison to search for his reincarnated love. For the past 3,000 years, she’s been cursed to die before each of her 30th birthdays. Chi Yu hopes to correct the mistakes of his past by resetting the flow of energy and time in order to change her fate.

Unfamiliar with modern society, his lack of social norms lead to some comical blunders. This demigod, of sorts, is used to being a source of power and authority. His confidence and dual ignorance is fun to watch as he searches for the woman he loves. This is when he bumps into Wen Su Xi, a confident and successful movie producer, who is about to launch her newest film. When Chi Yu mistakenly thinks his love has been reincarnated as Su Xi’s male, best friend, hilarity ensues.

Destiny’s Love is hitting all the right notes as I start the series. The story is fun and so far, not overdone. Bonus are decent visual effects and some creative styling. I’m going to keep watching, and Ill let you know if my opinion changes with a later review.
